<div style="margin:0 0 10px 0"><strong>March 25, Montpelier, VT:</strong> Governor Phil Scott has issued an order suspending in-person operations for all non-essential businesses and non-profits until approximately April 15th, 2020 (and probably beyond but we don't know for sure yet). Accordingly, all museum visits are suspended for the time being under the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” policy. During this time of physical distancing, the best thing we can do for our museum friends is to continue to offer digital resources. </div>

<div style="margin:0 0 10px 0">This micrometer makes amazingly accurate measurements. It is similar in form to an ordinary micrometer, but uses the glass flat in relation to the steel flat to make consistent pressure on the object which is being measured.</div>
<div style="margin:0 0 10px 0">Light, bouncing between the polished surfaces which are very close to each other, makes bands of light and dark. The width of the bands is exactly related to the distance between the reflecting surfaces and the wavelength of the light.</div>

<div style="margin:0 0 10px 0">As the wheel is turned, and the spindle moves down, the pressure increases on the measured object, and the flats are pulled apart as the micrometer frame is bent slightly by the pressure. The bands (best seen from above) change with the movement. If the bands are the same, the pressure is the same.</div>

<div style="margin:0px">This repeatable pressure allows the tool to be small and light, while still having accuracy on the order of 1/100,000 of an inch.</div>
